WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Der milliardenschwere Rettungsplan für die US-Autoindustrie ist vorerst gescheitert. Vor allem der Opel- Mutterkonzern General Motors (GM) Chrysler steuern nun möglicherweise auf eine baldige Insolvenz zu. Beide hatten Milliarden-Kredite noch im Dezember verlangt. GM engagierte laut einem Zeitungsbericht bereits Insolvenzberater. Ford gilt vorerst als etwas weniger gefährdet. Die Republikaner im US- Senat hatten die geplanten Not-Kredite von 14 Milliarden Dollar (10,8 Mrd Euro) in der Nacht zum Freitag gekippt. Ihnen gingen die Zugeständnisse der Autoindustrie nicht weit genug.
GM und Chrysler müssen nun vor allem darauf hoffen, dass das Weiße Haus ihnen doch noch Zugang zu dem 700 Milliarden Dollar schweren Rettungspaket eröffnet, das eigentlich für die Finanzbranche gedacht ist. Die Demokraten hatten dies schon lange gefordert. US-Präsident George W. Bush lehnte eine solche Lösung bisher ab.
