Baxter's first full fiscal year following the Vantive kidney-care divestiture presents a somewhat mixed picture. Revenue from continuing operations rose to roughly $11.2 billion, up about 6% year over year, yet the company reported a net loss of $957 million—its deepest of the past five years and a widening from 2024's loss. Total assets shrank by more than a fifth as discontinued operations left the balance sheet, and the reported operating result slipped into negative territory at ‑$308 million.

What stands out most in the profitability picture is the sharp compression in gross margin, which fell from roughly 37% to about 30% as cost of sales grew faster than revenue. This appears to be the primary driver behind the operating loss, since SG&A and R&D remained essentially flat. Layered on top were a $485 million goodwill impairment in Healthcare Systems & Technologies and $290 million of indefinite-lived intangible impairments—largely tied to the Front Line Care business—alongside an unexpectedly high $395 million tax expense despite a pre-tax loss. Notably, the three operating segments themselves remained profitable at the segment level, generating over $1.6 billion in combined operating income, which suggests the headline loss stems more from impairments, corporate items, and tax effects than from underlying operational deterioration.
