Financial analysis of Atlas Copco

Atlas Copco’s financial position appears robust, with FY2024 revenue of SEK 176.8 billion and net income of SEK 29.8 billion. Operating margins remained above 21%, and the group holds a net cash position with no financial debt on its balance sheet. While profitability metrics remain strong, a notable deceleration in top-line growth and a shift in the return profile could warrant a closer look.

Revenue growth slowed to just 2.4% year on year, a marked step down from the 25% two-year expansion and the three-year compound annual growth rate of nearly 17%. Gross margin edged lower to 42.85% from 43.5% a year earlier, which may reflect mixed effects from input costs or product mix. In contrast, the operating margin nudged up slightly and the net margin expanded to 16.85% from 16.25%, possibly helped by a low effective tax rate or contained finance costs. Return on equity fell from over 30% to 26.2%, as equity grew by 24%—driven by retained earnings and significant currency translation gains—while net income rose only 6%. This could indicate that the high historical profitability levels are becoming harder to sustain as the business matures.

The balance sheet is strikingly conservative. Cash and cash equivalents of SEK 19 billion exceed all interest‑bearing liabilities, resulting in negative net debt and a debt‑to‑equity ratio of zero. Total assets expanded 14%, largely because of intangible assets and goodwill, which now represent over SEK 77 billion, or roughly 37% of total assets. This heavy intangible base, likely accumulated through acquisitions, may introduce impairment sensitivity if acquired businesses underperform. Liquidity appears comfortable, with a current ratio of 1.7 and an interest coverage ratio above 35.
